Dear Guest,
Welcome to our wonderful home at Glenlo Abbey which has been welcoming guests since 1740 and is enriched in living history.

The original owners, the Ffrench family, are descendants of a knight who accompanied William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in the Norman Conquest of England. The Ffrench Family resided at Glenlo for 115 years. The Blake family, who were the next owners of Glenlo, were said to be descendants of Sir Ap-Lakem; a Knight of King Arthur’s round table. They went on to own estates throughout Galway including Menlo Castle, (a Castle now in ruin on the opposite banks of the River Corrib facing across from Glenlo Abbey.) The Palmer family purchased the estate in 1897, and during the 1960’s they opened their home to paying guests. Each of these familes were merchants of commercial importance in Galway City.

Nestled peacefully on a stunning 138 acre estate on the edge of Ireland’s largest lake Lough Corrib, the 5* newly refurbished Glenlo Abbey offers the discerning traveller a warm personable and luxurious base during their travels to Galway, along the Wild Atlantic Way and the West of Ireland.

On one side the beautiful, rugged and unspoilt natural scenery of Connemara lies right on our doorstep and creates a soft and balanced contrast to the vibrant and eclectic surroundings of life in Galway City. Voted recently as one of the friendliest cities in the world by ‘Travel & Leisure’ magazine the scene is well and truly set in Glenlo Abbey to offer the opportunity for enchanting memories to be created.

To further enhance your experience we have recently re-developed our 9 hole Championship Golf course designed by Christy O Connor Jnr. Golf lessons on a one to one basis with our Golf Professional Gary Madden are both fun and informative and are complemented by the superior facilities of our 21 bay driving range.

Fishing on Lough Corrib with our Ghillie, Falconry and Archery in the Walled Garden and private guided tours to the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey or the Aran Islands are just some of the activities to bring alive your sense of wonderment and re-energise you on your adventure.

For those looking to celebrate a special occasion Glenlo Abbey has a myriad of options to create long lasting memories for all involved. Our newly refurbished luxurious Corrib Banqueting Suite with views overlooking the grounds and Lough Corrib can transform an ordinary day into an extraordinary event for wedding couples to cherish forever. Executive meetings, off-site visits and team building activities are particularly popular for companies looking for fresh air to bring fresh thinking to their culture.

Finally our ‘piece de resistance’ comes in the form of our ‘Pullman Restaurant’ which are two former carriages that served on the Orient Express. A stay in this Castle Hotel would not be complete without savouring our award winning fine dining experience in one of Ireland’s most unique and historic settings.

We look forward to welcoming you to our home and to creating lasting memories until you visit again.

Warm regards

Marie Lally
